Next Chapter

Today I'm starting in a new job at Google! I'm not sure what I'll work on yet, but I certainly have some strong preferences!

Google seems to be open to employee blogging, so hopefully I can continue writing about work related topics. And I realize I've forgotten to finish my IDE tips "series" - I have a few more tips that I planned to cover so I'll try to get around to that soon!

  2. Oh fine, now I know where to refer for "please google it for me". ;-)

BTW: Are you free to use the IDE of your choice at Google? Or are they all using NetBeans? - Or do they switch to Eclipse now because they got sued (as they did also choose not to show up at JavaOne)? ;-)

  3. Does this mean no more working at home?

  4. Congrats Tor!

Is Joe the only one left who hasn't served time at Google now?

I'm a bit surprised considering other posse members left Google, I'd figure they would have talked you out of it (otherwise why would they have left).

I wonder if Eclipse will become your IDE of choice now ( by choice or by force).

  5. As Dominic said, welcome. I'd say you will be assimilated, but frankly, we're not that well organized at the core. ;-)

  7. Remember, the Google concept of 20% time is to use *their* time for coding, not 20% more of *your* time for coding.

  8. Tor, let's bring the Go programming language to Android! There's a lot to be done to make that happen.

  10. Congratulations on your new job.

I was wondering who will be continuing your work on the Netbeans Python plugin?

  11. Gratz on the new job.

I can see a pattern in the posse's employment rotation, Next up Joe will join Oracle and Dick will join Netflix :)

  12. After Google buying Instantiations perhaps you'll strengthen their IDE team. Especially with your experience in that field.

Whichever it'll be: Eclipse, Android, Google Me, Google Search… Google something good luck!

  13. Wait, what? We finally unloaded the Posse from our offices and you do what?!

Welcome to Google! I look forward to your contributions.

  16. Hi Tor, really have enjoyed your blog over the years. I've recently decided to take the plunge into GAE more fully after a year of eyeing closely and using for a minor project.

I started following you closely back in the Ruby days of NB. Thanks so much for all of your work and contributions on your blog.

I am curious if you have any strong opinions regarding Python IDEs. NB seems weak on that end and perhaps Komodo on the higher end so far from what I've seen and fiddled with.

    Again, best wishes and thanks.
