I joined Sun in 1996 and I've been here ever since -- including the Oracle acquisition six months ago. It's been a wonderful time. I've met many of the world's most talented engineers, I've had the chance to work on some interesting projects and I've learned a lot! I looked at my badge that I'm about to turn in (picture on left) and it has the original photo taken when I joined -- and I look like a kid!!
However, it's time to move on. I've chosen to take a new opportunity where I'll get to have even more fun. For now, I'd like to thank all my former Sun and Oracle coworkers for the great experiences you've given me and wish you luck with the future!

Gook luck with your new adventure, Tor.
ReplyDeleteGook luck!
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I hope the change in jobs will not keep you from the Java Posse podcasts!
ReplyDeleteGood luck Tor, great meeting you @ JavaOne.
ReplyDeleteThanks for years of the Java Posse podcast and your work in NB.
ReplyDeleteAnd you never delivered Project Semplice. I don´t care about the logistics or reasons, it was your baby. EPIC FAIL!.
ReplyDelete:-(

Hey Tor
ReplyDeleteSaw you very briefly at JavaOne 2010. I suspect that this means the authoring tools for JavaFX is practical over for JavaFX Script, and I know you don't want to go back to coding UI is Java. I wish you best of luck in whatever future endeavour are.

Guess you're leaving on good terms, since you're returning EXIT_SUCCESS from your long-running process.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, just as I was getting heavily entrenched in JaveFX and Netbeans... Interesting...
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Java Posse can do a show once a week now???
Best of luck, Tor!
Thank you everyone!
ReplyDeleteFC, my involvement with Semplice was the IDE infrastructure, which I deliberately made generic. The compiler guys left Sun and went to Google, and one of them wrote another basic compiler there - look for project "simple" on code.google.com. As for me I then repurposed the work and continued developing it for Ruby.
Hi Peter, this does not in any way mean the authoring tool is dead; there is still a team in Grenoble working on it. It was by no means a one-man effort!
And Chris, yes, the return code was deliberate. I'm leaving Oracle on good terms and I wish them and my many friends there all the best.
Congrats on the new gig Tor!
ReplyDeleteGood luck on your new journey.
ReplyDeleteGood luck, Tor. I have it on good authority that there is life after Sun.
ReplyDeleteWow Tor, that's a shocker. It's a big loss for Oracle and a big gain for wherever you're going. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Tor. It's been great fun working with you.
ReplyDeleteAll the best with the new endeavours, Tor. Will look forward to hearing what you're up to on your blog and on the JavaPosse. :o)
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteall the best. I remember the intern in that badge photo from the mid 90s! Glad you joined Sun way back then. And nothing but the very best in the next thing.
All the best in your next endeavor Tor. Keep rocking the 'posse ;-)
ReplyDeleteMaybe it´s an opportunity to create a separate open source project based on Semplice?.
ReplyDeleteThen you can sell the community web site to Snoracle. ;)

Hi Tor
ReplyDeleteGreat to know that the authoring tool still has a life. I am genuinely glad that you are well, and that you found a new gig; and your terms for leaving Oracle were amicable.
Great Stuff!
Congrats on the move, Tor. It was good to see you at JavaOne this year.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the move. It's definitely a weird feeling when you realize you actually don't work for Sun/Oracle anymore - that you're no longer on the Java mothership. But that's got its pluses too - and it's eye opening to look at the technologies you've been working on for years as an end-user of them instead of as the creator of them.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you picked a good time. Care to drop any hints on what's next for you?

Thank you Tor for all you haven given the Java community over the years.
ReplyDeleteI wish you well in your new endeavor.
Also my best wishes.
ReplyDeleteThat Oracle is suing Google for me is creating less worries than the fact that so many Java essential employees are leaving Oracle.
Unfortunately I never met you yet - I would like to have a talk with you. Let me know when you once pass through Vienna (in Austria).
Tor,
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your hard work through the years. Also, helping inspire many people including myself. What does it mean for the Java Posse? (none of you guys are Oracle employees now, right?) Just hope they don't sue cause of the Java. (just kidding)
Best wishes on your new job. Hopefully you'll start using Twitter more.
By the way, thanks for the explanation about your involvement in project semplice. I wasn´t aware of the details, just saddened that it was never delivered. :-(

Sad to see you leave Sun/Oracle but I'm sure you'll do great with your new job. We don't know each other but I sure have seen your name a lot in the Netbeans modules I've worked on.

All the best, Tor, and let's keep in touch. Petr
ReplyDeleteThank you so much everyone!! I'm starting my new job today, at Google. Should be fun!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new job! I've listened to the Java Posse for years and always appreciate your insights.
ReplyDeleteSorry to see you leave, Tor! Good luck in your new gig.
ReplyDeleteYou were one of the most talented engineers at Sun and expect to see many good things from you in the future. You rapidly fulfilled (but not necessarily in Studio compilers+tools group) the enormous potential we initially saw in you.... stay on the hockey curve and change the world!
Good luck at your new adventure, Tor! :) It is sad to see so many great people leaving Sun... ehm, Oracle...
ReplyDeleteOh~~~ no, one less source of cool Netbean tips! I'll continue to enjoy your blog and podcast.
